Character Information
*Character Name: Rung
*Character Canon: Transformers: IDW
*Age: Old; Somewhere in the 6mil mark.
*Race: Cybertronian
*Timeline/Pull Point:
After holding a session with the newly returned Fortress Maximus, Rung urged the other to open up and try and explore his trauma some, to help the bot get passed everything that had happened to him. Unfortunately Rung’s attempts didn’t do him much good and Fort Max snapped, going on a bit of a rampage through The Lost Light which ended in him taking Rung and Whirl prisoner. Bound to his chair while Whirl was overpowered by Fort Max, Rung did his best to try and break through to their captor though he didn’t make much progress as Fort Max dodge the subject. It wasn’t until a hologram of Overlord torturing Fort Max was projected into the room by Rewind that Rung was able to comfort the crumbling Fort Max and everything seemed to be fine and dandy.
At least until a shot fired by Swerve meant to incapacitate Fort Max hit Rung in the head instead, seemingly killing the psychotherapist. At least, that’s what everyone else thought…
Rung has been canon updated to issue #15 of the comics, after the discovery of Overlord on the ship and the other's destruction.
*History:
http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Rung
Rung's first big project, his first big patient, was Impactor. He did a psychological evaluation on the bot before Impactor was put on trial, everything ending rather badly for Rung when he was physically assaulted and threatened with horrible acts of violence if he attempted to put any ideas into Impactor's head. He managed to calm the situation down though and made it out in one piece, though Rung himself was left wondering whether or not the High Command shared some of the blame for Impactor's crimes, considering they had turned a blind eye to the bot's growing psychosis.
Because of his expertise, Rung was later recruited to perform a pre-mission evaluation on the new Wreckers Rotorstorm, Ironfist, Pyro, and Guzzle to see if they were fit to join the main Wreckers team on the mission to Garrus-9. While he was unimpressed with Rotorstorm, disappointed at how much Pyro was suppressing, and unnerved by Guzzle's constant play with his gun's safety, he approved the three for the mission. Ironfist was the bot Rung hesitated with, unsure if he was a good fit for the Garrus-9 case but he eventually changed his mind--thanks to the intervention of Prowl.
After a rather bad run with Flattop--who literally died right in Rung's office--the psychotherapist was asked by Kup, one of his oldest friends, to examine Springer after the bot was left in a coma. Rung believed that certain emotional triggers could cause the comatose bot's subconscious to force his spark across the zero point so he asked Roadbuster to read Wreckers: Declassified to Springer in hopes of triggering that sort of effect.
He was among the survivors of Cyclonus' attack on the Kimia Facility, cramped into an escaped pod with several others for quite awhile before they were finally rescued by Arcee and recruited to help with the events going down on Cybertron. When the planet was reborn in the wake of the D-Void's defeat, Rung was among the bots to join Rodimus' crew on the Lost Light, going with them in search of the Knights of Cybertron. (Though, unfortunately for him, his arm was detached by a wildly flying Cyclonus who was in the midst of a throw down with Whirl.) His arm was repaired by Ratchet though Rung was assaulted by a rather irrational Whirl who had awoke in the med bay disoriented. Rung managed to get the other to back off by reminding him that he'd be sent back to prison if he didn't stay in line. Whirl thankfully backed off and Rung survived yet another interesting encounter with a patient.
Another close encounter came from an encounter with a Sparkeater that had apparently been aboard the ship when it was purchased, luckily saved by Skids. (Rodimus proceeded to use the pair to lure the Sparkeater down to the lower levels so he could defeat it.)
Rung ended up with Red Alert back in his care while onboard the ship, which proved to be beyond interesting as it always had, and he ended up taking in Fortress Maximus as well when the other made his return. He worked hard with both individuals, while still working with some of the other crew members as well, but Fort Max ended up snapping and taking Rung and Whirl, who were in the middle of a session, hostage. With help from a hologram projected through the window by Rewind, Fort Max was turned into a crumbled mess of insecurity and Rung immediately went to comfort his patient, not caring about his own damages at the hand of the other because Fort Max was his patient.
Unfortunately, luck was not on Rung's side and a shot fired by Swerve, meant to incapacitate Fort Max despite the situation’s resolve, hit the pyschotherapist instead and seemingly killed him.
*Personality:
Rung is one of those bots who has learned a lot after six million years of being around and dealing with bots of every shape, size, and mental complexity. (Especially prospective and established Wreckers; that in itself has taught him a lot….specifically patience and accepting just about anything that anyone has to throw at him.)
First and foremost, it’s important to understand that Rung is a very compassionate bot at the core. He truly cares about those that come into his care and will do whatever he can to help them, willing to go to whatever lengths or work with them for however long to get them back to a functioning state of being. He remembers everything he’s ever been told by his patients, especially those that were primary cases for him at various points throughout his life. Even when he’s being threatened by a patient, Rung always manages to keep himself collected and approaches the situation with an open mind and a gentle spark.
Along those same lines, Rung is very loyal to his patients and will not, under any circumstances, divulge information to any individual that is not meant to be shared or included in a report. (His reports are full and very detailed but the personal things he’s told by those that he works with are kept to himself and the patient in question.) No matter what situation Rung may find himself in, he’s a rather hard nut to crack and puts protecting his patients and their integrity over protecting himself.
Anger isn’t something that comes naturally to Rung, the psychotherapist not easily riled given he’s had to deal with quite a lot in his line of work. He’s learned to not let things get to him because if he does, then he’ll never get anywhere with his patients and that’s the most important thing to him. He keeps his own issues and frustrations to himself, never allowing himself to take them out on a patient or another bot.
Rung isn’t a genius, by any means, but he’s very intuitive and very good at deduction. Everything is a puzzle to him, in a sense, and he’s very good at matching the pieces together and figuring out what the bigger picture is even if some of the pieces are missing. (Because he’s not one to pry; his approach to his work is waiting for his patients to feel comfortable enough to trust him with the information they have to give. So, no matter how long it takes to get the story out of a bot, Rung will wait and let them set the pace.) He never rushes to judgments or anything like that, willing to give bots chance after chance after chance if he sees the potential for something much more in them. There are honestly very few bots that’s given up on and frequently checks up on those that have been his patients in the past.
When it comes to things like fighting, Rung isn’t a very active participant; it’s just not what he does. His work is with bots that need him or bots that need to be screened so that’s what he focuses on and tries to avoid fighting as much as possible. Now, that’s not to say that he can’t defend himself if he needs to, but Rung rarely uses his self defense abilities because he’d much rather try and talk to the bots he’s dealing with and resolve the situation through words instead of fists.
When it comes right down to it, Rung is fairly ‘down to Earth’ sort of individual. He can generally be found organizing the models he collects when he isn’t working with a patient or reading through datalogs/working on reports that he’s been doing. (His reports are added to the Autopedia after completion.) He doesn’t need adventure, he doesn’t need the thrill; he’s quite content to just settle in his office and do his own thing. Rung isn’t antisocial though, the doctor being quite chatty when he’s around others and very personable, to some extent because he does have those awkward moments sometimes, but he’ll never object to the company of others—unless he’s doing something concerning the confidentiality of a patient.
*Powers/Abilities:
+Skilled psychotherapist: Having been doing this particular job for almost six million years, Rung has become very good at what he does, so good that he was the bot new recruits for the Wreckers were sent to in order to make sure they were going to be able to handle whatever was thrown at them. He’s worked with lots of different bots over the years and has a very gentle and soothing approach to his work.
+Recording Device: Located in his thumb, Rung is able to record any and all conversations he has with his patients or just random individuals that he happens to find himself in an interesting conversation with. He is able to play back the recorded data outloud or to himself when he’s organizing his reports and even has the ability to broadcast what he’s recording for others to hear while it’s happening.
+Alt Mode: Like all Cyberteonians, Rung has the ability to transform into a different form. His chosen alt mode is a matinence communications vehicle with a long ladder like arm extending off of it. Rung honestly does not use this mode much, unless he needs to travel long distances or somethig of that sort.
*Inventory:
+One of his model Arks, the one he was holding during his confrontation with Fortress Maximus to be exact.
+All of his data logs, of course.

[The video pops on, focusing on Rung who seems out of sorts--disoriented in a way as he rubs his forehead slightly.]
I’m not sure what happened or where I am but I am extremely worried about Fortress Maximus and Whirl. I can't seem to locate either of them, or any of the crew for that matter and it just..doesn't make any sense.
[His hand lowers, the psychotherapist sighing softly as his optics dim.]
What I don't understand is how I got here when I know I was on the Lost Light before hand. It just doesn't make sense unless something happened to us again. Maybe another warp event?
[A rueful sort of smile touches his lips as he seems to regain his resolve, fiddling with something just out of view of the video feed.]
One way or another I'm sure I'll locate them.
[The video cuts out, Rung's optics still dim and the smile already starting to fade as he glances away.]
*Third Person Sample:
At first, all he could hear was a ringing sound.
It was a long moment before anything else happened, his systems slowly coming back online, and when his optics finally focused, Rung found himself staring at an unfamiliar sky.
Sky. Wait. That wasn’t right. He’d been inside the Lost Light.
The psychotherapist pushed himself up only to pause as his head throbbed, lifting a hand to touch his forehead, optics flickering then dimming some as he tried to get rid of the pain. It took a moment before he was finally able to accomplish it, staring down at his lap—where one of his models rested, how curious—lowering his hand after a moment. His fingers brushed against the model ARK in his lap, Rung resting his hand on it as his gaze lifted to the sky. Yes, that definitely wasn’t right. He was supposed to be on the Lost Light, he was supposed to be helping--
“Fort Max? Whirl?” Rung called out before he could stop himself, not considering the fact that he could be somewhere dangerous and drawing attention to himself probably wasn’t a good idea. There were far bigger things to worry about—far more important for that matter because Whirl hadn’t been in the physical condition to be somewhere by himself, even if he might have argued that point, and Fort Max hadn’t been in the psychological condition to be by himself. The fact that he was someplace completely unfamiliar was the last thing on his mind now. “Hello? Anyone?”
Climbing to his feet a little faster than he probably should have, Rung stumbled a few steps before he was able to stabilize himself, closing off to the pain tormenting his head. He had to stay up; he had to…to figure out where the others were. (Then perhaps he could figure out where they were in general.) Rung activated his scanners, staying where he was for a long moment as he just tried to pick up on anything familiar—any familiar spark signatures. When nothing came up, he hesitated, cradling the model ARK in his arms before he took a step, then another, figuring it was better to keep moving rather than stay in one spot.
He was a bit of a sitting duck the way he was now and that wasn’t going to do anyone any good. The others might potentially need him so he had to look out for himself right now and stay alive. That was the most important thing.
At least until he found the others.
